persistent printing problem

We have a 2K workstation that recently developed a
persistent problem losing communication with its local
printer. I've tried switching printer cables,
uninstalling/reinstalling the printer, updating printer
drivers, etc. The only thing that works is deleting and
reinstalling the printer port in Device Manager. Then it
will print for a while, but after a few hours the problem
reappears and no print jobs go through. I'm stumped.
Printer is HP LJ4, if that matters.

There might be a problem with the printer going into power saving mode. See
if you can disable that on the printer itself. It's under the "Job" menu, if
I recall correctly.
