persistent oscilation between bios and windows opening

I've got an older hp (6746C) which came with windows ME. Subsequently i up
graded to XP and every thing worked fine. Then when I went to broadband
Internet and related security software it slowed to a stand still. So
recently I bought some more ram for it. Then the trouble began--now it it
oscillates back and forth between a bios descriptor of the computer and
windows xp logo (about 2 sec) then back to the original window. With out
going through all the subsequent machinations--I restored my Me (the original
disc --the only one I have) and then the xp update.

The same oscillation is persistent I can go thru setup etc and get the start
up options (ie Safe mode. normal etc) but nothing will make it boot up. The
oscillation just goes on. Incidentally when I reinstall just the ME it still
oscillates including the windowsxp logo--so why doesn't the re installation
of Me wipe out the xp logo? If bios display is disabled in the bios set up
then the oscillation is between an hp logo and the windowsxp logo and at
seemingly the same rate.

Boot to XP setup CD, and press 'r' for Repair. At the Recovery Console
prompt, type:
CHKDSK /R
You probably have a damaged hard drive.

thanks. i also fixed boot and mbr. then reloded the xp op system as a second
op system. The new os works ok but the original still gives troubles. It ends
in an error code of 0x0000007e (0xc0000005, 0x00000000, 0xf898a924,
0xf898a620). The literature is avqailable for the basic code but not for the
detailed codes, what ever they mean.

Some Common reasons for this could be: 1) The Operating System does not
have a driver for the controller card that is being used in this system.
this means that the appropriate driver needs to be downloaded from the
vendor's website and placed on a floppy disk. During Setup you will need to
hit the F6 key when that option is presented during setup to load the
driver. ( www.highpoint-tech.com ) 2) Second most common reason This can be
caused by boot sector viruses. So make sure that the system is scanned for
viruses before starting the installation. 3) The volume could be corrupt and
is not readable. When trying to read the volume it is not finding the data
on it or the data is illegible. 4) Post setup the registry may be corrupted.
5) Drive Translation is being used that is not being understood.
