Periodically will not Sleep

Hello all,

I have an HP DV6500t Pavilion notebook (specs below) and I've noticed about
once a week that when I close the lid to sleep the notebook, it will not go
to sleep. The HDD light will go on and everything acts like it is going to
Sleep, but it will just sit there.

I open the lid and it is black, with the power still on. I leave it for a
few minutes, and it hasn't moved...almost as if it has frozen.

Any ideas? This doesn't happen a lot, but usually about once a week and it
is VERY annoying. Thanks!

Laudanum! Or gin and warm water.

All kidding aside, I think sleep and hibernation are the cause
of more laptop problems... Honestly I just disable all that stuff and
shut down when I'm finished. File it under should work but doesn't and
get on with your life

Other than that it's the usual crapshoot of motherboard drivers/
BIOS/BIOS settings, heck, even the video drivers can mess up sleep. Good
luck...

Ha, thanks!

It works fine 98% of the time but about once every week or so, it will just
sit.

I got spoiled on sleep w/ my last notebook; I like it b/c I can get back to
work right away w/out having to wait for bootup.

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem on new HP Compaq 6720s notebook. I've
bought it few days ago, and the problem showed up on the first day. OS
version is Home Premium. System hungs almost every time I try to sleep
it. I can't even shut it down sometimes, and the kernel-power issue
appears. It's driving me crazy.

I have also a HP Compaq NX7400, with Vista Business installed, the
same problem appears, but I thought, that it's because it wasn't
designed for Vista and drivers might have been corrupted. But on brand
new laptop problem looks exactly the same.

Is there some Microsoft hotfix for this?

Klitch: I haven't seen anything on Microsoft's site, but I called HP
(actually chatted) and they said to Uninstall the ACPI information in Device
Manager, reboot, and it will re-install itself.

I have not noticed a difference but I also have not had the machine not
sleep either since. I've been sleeping my machine for a solid week and it
has not had insomnia.

Try chatting w/ HP on their site : http://www.hp.com/support and see if they
offer any other solution. If you can, post it to this thread.

Otherwise, no issues...Vista has been solid since day 1 for me. This is the
only real annoyance.

I have the same problem with my Dell Vostro 1500. (My O/S is Vista Business
with NVidia 256 MB Graphics card)

I was informed by dell support that vista o/s causing this problem.
Even thoguh we are not using the hibernate mode, internally these modes
(sleep and hibernate) conflicting and not able to complete the sleep
transition.

I hope this can be resolved with SP1 Vista

Cheers Venkat. I too think it is a Vista issue rather than a Dell or HP issue.

Last Saturday, after the final BSOD, I decided to do a re-install; I started
at 12:30pm and by 2:30pm, it was at only 30% completed. In my haste to get
this taken care of, I went to the Apple Store and picked up a white Macbook.

When we had gotten back (around 5-ish), it had an error where I was to
insert the HP Supplemental Disc--I did and it couldn't read the disc. Called
HP, they are sending out another disc. I give them the address to ship it
to, they ship it to my old address...go figure.

The length of time it took to install Vista may be attributed to things
other than Vista, but I hadn't the patience to deal w/ it; I also needed to
get a paper done for Monday and it was just taking way too long. As of this
writing, the $2,000 machine I got is still sitting on the desk w/ a partial
install of Vista.

I don't blame HP b/c I bought a DV1000 about two years ago and had to do
only one recovery of XP (which took 30-40min for everything).

I think that Microsoft can do better (A LOT better) than this... a computer
sitting idle and giving the BSOD for simply trying to sleep is inexcusable.

Go to Advance Power Settings.
Set hard drive to turn off a minute or 2 before sleep.
Set Hybrid and Hibernate modes to "Off"
Under USB settings select "Disable"
Under Multimedia select "Allow ....."
