Period removes underscore.

When I add a period at the end of underscored text, it removes the
underscore. Is there some setting in options that is doing this?
 
Can you reproduce this behavior in any document, or just with a particular
one? If you start Word in Safe mode (hold Ctrl as you start the application),
do you still see it?
