Performance

Hi

I have a model that runs like a dog and I am wondering if it could b
significantly improved with better hardware Or if it is an inheran
limitation of Excel.

The model runs like a dog when I select to perform 'Sub total' on
data range that is 500 rows long and has 60 subtotals across 6
columns.

My current specs are:

Software
Excel 2003 (Professional Edition)
Windows XP Professional Version 2002

Hardware
GCL Mobile Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4-M CPU 1.80 GHz
1.18 GHz
1.00 GB of RAM

All advice is greatly appreciated.

Regards
Pete

Peter, it sounds like your computer is more than adequate for the job
Where I work we have a massive Excel file from citibank that contain
the data for all banking (for wiring funds) details for al
crewmembers in our entire fleet. That comes out to about 37,00
crewmembers

Every week the file gets larger as new crewmembers are added - (yes i
is a stupid way of doing it...) - and even on Pentium III's runnin
Win2k and Office2000 there is almost no performance lag

There are many things that can affect performance. One thing is t
look at your taskmanager and see how many tasks are running. Ther
may be many tasks you don't recognize and you didn't initiate.
computer tech can tell right away if your windows is bogged down b
spyware, adware, or any other tasks that might be affecting you
system's performance

Thanks Balazs

Under normal circumstances the model runs quite well, however the model
runs like a dog when I select to perform 'Sub total' on a data range
that is 500 rows long and has 60 subtotals across 60 columns.

Does the model you refer to include a large 'Sub total' range?

Also, since discovering Sumproduct I have used it quite extensively
throughout the model. I know that Sumproduct absorbs a fair bit of
resource, but it is not used at all on the worksheet that includes the
Sub-Total routine. I have turned calculation to 'Manual', but this
doesn't make any difference.

If I could limit the calculation that takes place to the sheet that
includes the 'Sub Total' function then this would probably improve
performance. However, I don't know if (or how) this is possible?

Any assistance is greatly appreciated?

Regards
Peter
