Performance very slow when off corporate LAN

We have several XP Pro laptops that normally login in to a domain. When
working offsite, these are connected to client's LANs to access internet.
These machines are dreadfully slow (all applications, not just internet) when
connected to any LAN other than the "home" LAN, regardless of whether wired
or wireless.

Any ideas?

Are your users using local accounts on the laptops or are they logging in
with their usual network credentials?

Try logging on as the local administrator and see if it's still slow.

That fixes the speed, but then as a different user, obviously icons & setups
are different.
