What are the causes and is there any safe remedy, if a FULLY protected and
regullaryrily scanned (with negative results) PC with 60% free HDD, 512 MB
Ram and a Pentium 4 - 3.20GHz Processor becomes sluggish over some time in
performing the simplest of tasks e.g. producing files?

Zygy,

you really need to volunteer much more information, Examples

you say "Processor becomes sluggish"
--> what do you see, feel, experience, why do you think it is the processor,
what app or apps are you running. "Sluggish" compared to what ? do you have
a baseline to compare against ? what did you expect that didn't happen ?

you say "over some time "
--> how much time ? 5 min ? 5 weeks ? what were you doing before, in that
period (between booting and "sluggish")

you say "simplest of tasks e.g. producing files"
--> what are you doing, what app, what do you see or don't you see, what
files.

Give an exact example, with exact symptoms, with exact errors, with an exact
timeline, AND voluteer as much information you might think is important for
us to understand your problem.

Rgds,
Edwin.

To increase you free space on your XP partition select Start,
All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, Disk CleanUp,
More Options, System Restore and remove all but the latest
System Restore points? Restore points can be quite large.

You should use Disk CleanUp regularly to Empty your
Recycle Bin and Remove Temporary Internet Files.
Whenever you remove redundant files you should always
run Disk Defragmenter by selecting Start, All Programs,
Accessories, System Tools, Disk Defragmenter.

Please post a copy of the Error / Warning Reports as they
appear in System / Application logs in Event Viewer.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control
Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer. When
researching the meaning of the error, information
regarding Event ID, Source and Description are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer
in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308427&Product=winxp

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event
Viewer and double click on the error you want to copy.
In the window, which appears is a button resembling
two pages. Click the button and close Event Viewer.
Now start your message (email) and do a paste into
the body of the message. This will paste the info from
the Event Viewer Error Report. Make sure this is the
first paste after exiting from Event Viewer.

You say "FULLY protected and regullaryrily scanned," but you say nothing
about what software you use to do this. Not all anti-virus and anti-spyware
software is equal, and by far the most common cause of such problems these
days is malware infestation.

Despite your thinking you are free of malware infestation, my guess its that
you are infected. I recommend that you go to Malke's Malware Removal site at
http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware and follow
the instructions there.

It that doesn't solve your problems, post back for more suggestions.

Many thanks for the reply. To protect my computers I use the following:- Zone
Alarm, AVG Pro. Spayware Doctor, Ad-Aware and Registry Mechanic, because
although the last two are similar I found that after scanning with the first
one the second one still finds more infected files. It is impossible for me
to carry out all the suggested procedures in the link you gave me. I will
need a mechanic to do this. Nevertheless thank you again.

By all accounts you need to be careful with Registry Mechanic.
