Performance Issue - Startup & Defrag

All of a sudden, my system takes about 10 mins to boot-up
and about the same time for defragmenter to even load. I
can't run defragmenter because even selecting a menu
withdraws my control for another 10-15 minutes.

My system has an Athlon 1700XP plus over 40Gb spare Hdd
and over 500MB of Ram. So problems there.

I regularly run spyware (eg S&D), cleanup, Norton scans my
system every night for viruses (none ever found) plus
Norton WinDoctor to tidy things up. I have the Norton
firewall on constantly (am on broadband) plus Windws and
all Norton programs are always automatically updated.

It all seems okay to me but I don't know where to look
next but I feel lost being unable to periodicaly run the
defragmenter and suffering poor overall system performance.

Can anyone suggest something please?

Go to the Microsoft Management Console and check the
System and Application Event viewers.

Right Click My Computer, Left click Manage - Expand the
Event Viewer by clicking the +. Locate any Errors (Red) &
click each to examine the description of the event.

Norton WinDoctor may have removed Registry keys &
values that are behind this problem. I strongly advise you
to discontinue use of WinDoctor.

WinDoctor does not remove anything unilaterally--if
anything was removed, the OP did it. Your
advice to discontinue use of WinDoctor is nonetheless
well taken if the OP did indeed remove things without
understanding what he was doing.
