performance is getting low and low

Right after the installation of Xp my windows get slower
ans slower and also get hanged for 2 to 3 seconds.
but when installed new then it is just like fastest one.
i have P-III with intel board and 128 dimm and 40GB hard
disk.
please send me some treatment for that
