Peer-to-peer port

Hi,

im running a small peer-to-peer network with xp machines and a windows
2000 computer acting as file server. When turning on the built-in
windows XP firewall, its impossible to access the win 2000 machine,
and I cant see any of the other computers in my workgroup. What ports
do I have to open to allow printer sharing and to manage files
(read/write/delete) on the file server?

Windows XP firewall does not filter outgoing requests, but it does filter
all incoming traffic. So if you turn on ICF and try and browse to Windows
2000 you should be able to since nothing is filtered out.

Do by any change these Windows XP run on SP2 (beta) or do you use IP
Filters?

3rd party personal firewalls (e.g. ZoneAlarm,...) also filter outgoing
traffic.

Assuming you have a perimeter firewall protecting your network, your best bet would
be to disable the XP firewall while on the lan. You can open holes in the firewall
but since the XP firewall is very basic [but effective for it's purpose] you would
need to open the ports to ALL access which would leave a huge hole in the firewall if
protecting from the internet. But to answer your question the ports you need to open
vary based on your network configuration and you could get away with opening port 139
TCP, but if name resolution and browsing is used ports 137 and 138 UDP would also
