Peer to Peer LAN in XP

Do I have to use a router between the two computers or just an ethernet cable
between the two.
I do not want to access the web through the LAN, just file and print share.
I have loaded the drivers for the on Board NIC on each computer end are
recognised and reportated to be working OK. I get a message stating that the
network cable is unpluged.
I am not sure where to go from here.

You can use a crossover cable between 2 computers. Not a patch cable, though.
