PDF Creator Tomahawk PDF+ v2.0.2.0

M

MightyKitten

I've found this PDF Creator. Maybe new to you, maybe not:

Tomahawk PDF+ gives you a complete PDF file creation suite right on your
computer. Tomahawk can also be used as an advanced editor for rtf, txt, tmd
(our own format) and other file formats.
Tomahawk has now been released as CareWare.

New to me. It has such a vast feature set that I'm almost tempted to
ask "What's the catch"?

I've DL'd Tomahawk PDF+ but have yet to try it out. Hope it's
spy/nagware free.

Thanks for the link.

Well, thanks to both of you, because it seems a wonderful application.

First of all, I've monitored its install with TUN and this is its log:

Modifiche al sistema apportate da 'Tomahawk'
Total Uninstall, 10/01/2005 14.35.00

Risorse del computer
===============

File di sistema
===============
(cartella) C:\Programmi\Tomahawk
(+)(file) Tomahawk.ini = 14.25 10/01/05 28 byte
(+)(cartella) C:\Programmi\Tomahawk\Pdf Conversion

Registro di Windows
===============
(+)(chiave) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.tmd
(+)(valore) (Predefinito) = 'Tomahawk'
(+)(chiave) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Tomahawk
(+)(valore) (Predefinito) = 'Tomahawk Document'
(+)(chiave) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Tomahawk\DefaultIcon
(+)(valore) (Predefinito) = 'C:\Programmi\Tomahawk\Tomahawk.exe,1'
(+)(chiave) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Tomahawk\shell
(+)(chiave) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Tomahawk\shell\open
(+)(chiave) HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Tomahawk\shell\open\command
(+)(valore) (Predefinito) = 'C:\Programmi\Tomahawk\Tomahawk.exe "%1"'

That's all. Fantastic.

Then, to test it, I created my first pdf file starting with a plain txt
file, size 510 KB. In about 2 seconds Tomahawk has created a perfect pdf
file, and its size is 421 KB.

The only shortcoming is that it comes without the help file, which you get
donating 20 $. However there is no advertising, no crippling 'features'.
On the contrary it seems rich of possibilities: images, tables, lists,
colors,...

One slight nuisance I found is that Tomahawk can't open a PDF file?

Yes, it doesn't open pdf files, a pdf reader is needed.
However I don't care much about that, I like now the AR 7.0 that is much
quicker and lighter than 6.0 (I've disabled all the web browser options
under Internet Preferences), and at last remembers always the last opened
page (the bugginess of this feature in the previous versions was driving me
nuts).

Did you try using the 'extract from PDF' function in the 'tools' dropdown menu?

Yes I did. Extracting simple text is no problem, even AAR has an extract
tool that works well. The PDF file I'm working on at the moment has text
boxes and other formatting that is lost entirely when using these extract
methods.

Thanks for your test Maria.
How does Tomahawk compare to PDF Creator in pdf generation ?

You are welcome.

OT : I read a few days ago you were looking for a mail notifier ; have you given poptray a try ? It is
really an outstanding piece of software.

Thank you.
I'm using ePrompter. In that other post I think I said it doesn't support
GMail, but yesterday I got an update and now it supports it :)

Uhmm, seeing the features of poptray (the Rules expecially) I think I'd like
it. Downloading right now :-D

:) ; I tested ePrompter a few days ago and am not ready to leave
:popTray. If gmail support is important, please watch both the
:plugins section and the forum.

Hmm, didn't you write an online course about regex ?
PopTray supports them too ;-)

I really like the PopTray features. There is a problem though: I've
installed the Gmail plugin and configured the account, but when I check it I
get this Windows error:

---------------------------
PopTray
---------------------------
Access violation at address 05E17AE0. Read of address 05E17AE0.
---------------------------
OK
---------------------------

Yes :)

Great! Now I have to solve the gmail problem, then I'm happy :)
I'll look in their forum also.

I've found myself the solution: I had installed the gmail plugin with
PopTray open, therefore I had the Access Violation. Closing PT and
restarting it again fixes the problem!

Thanks again Antoine, I'll set aside ePrompter, also because PT eats much
less memory while staying resident, even if it is much reacher of features.

Do you know if a plugin for yahoo is coming?

Glad it works on your machine. I have a gmail account but almost never use it. From PT's
forum, it seems that this plugin doesn't always work well. It also looks as though PopTray's
author doesn't strive to make it work since gmail accounts seem to be poppable.

Yes, indeed. As somebody pointed out in the mail notifier thread, ePrompter is not easily fully
uninstallable (manual registry cleaning required, ...). Concerning PT, everything is clear and
all the settings are stored in one .ini file.

No I am sorry I don't.

PS : the only drawback some could complain about with PT is that it doesn't support html
rendering. As for me, I don't care : 'non text mail' <=> 'spam mail' :)

PPS : the plus of PopTray are imho :
- very much configurable (time delays, shortcuts, gui, ...)
- dedicated and steady work from the author (PT has been under development for several
years)
- forum with very nice people (rdsok, homaquebec, inebboso (italian localizer), vittoco
(regex's master))
- very well maintained localization work (thanks to vittoco's tool especially)
- big localization team (almost 30 languages are supported and most translations are up to
date)

Same for me :)

New issue: did you try the Hotmail plugin? It doesn't work for my .msn
account : it says "Plug-in Error: Authorization Required". I've seen that in
the forum other people have this error, but I couldn't find a solution.
Well, no great problem for a while, I hope someone will correct it.

Ciao,

Sorry, I don't use the hotmail plugin either.
Actually, I am only using isp and own domains' pop accounts for several reasons :

- I don't trust those free webmail accounts
- Whatever the mail notifier/client, it looks to me as if it is always a catch-up-trial from the plugin
developpers to counter the defense of webmail accounts
