Originally developed by ZSOFT for its PC Paintbrush program, PCX is a
graphics file format for graphics programs running on PCs. It is supported
by most optical scanners, fax programs, and desktop publishing systems.
Files in the PCX format end with a ".pcx" ( pronounced dot -p-c-x)
extension. Two other common bit map formats are BMP and TIFF.

.PCX Microsoft Paint & PC Paintbrush Windows/DOS.

Hi,

It's an image file that's not native to WinXP. Try a third-party viewer like
Irfanviewer (it's free from www.irfanview.com).

Ok, thanks David, wasn't aware of that. Last time I ran across a pcx file on
a new installation, XP said "huh?", didn't bother trying to assoctiate it to
paint, just installed irfanview (which is far more useful than paint
anyways, I just hadn't gotten around to it)l

Paint still opens pcx files. Just can't save them anymore.

And the 98 file preview, which is built in to XP but with no UI, also does PCX and MIX files.
