PCMCIA doesn't recognize new hardware

I have tried two different wireless cards in my Sony Vaio
and it never recognizes the hardware. I reloaded entire
system OS, drivers, apps. No change.
 
Did you install the software for the PCMCIA card BEFORE inserting it into
the notebook?
