I can also confirm that moving the card to a different slot works!
I was given a Dell Dimension 4100 desktop to use as a 2nd PC, circa year 2000 but no network card.
Purchased the Belkin Desktop Network PCI Card F5D5000UK from Amazon at £6.95.
Fitted in 3 mins, no problem.
Power up PC, XP finds card but cannot install driver, also won't install driver from CD. Try 2/3 times, just won't install.
Scratch head, google search the problem. Find this site, read suggestion about using a different slot.
Move card to another spare slot, power up again, eh presto!!!
Found and working - problem resolved.
I don't know why 1 slot is different to another. I didn't remove or swop around any existing cards (modem & sound) , just used another available slot. Can't explain it - BUT IT WORKED.
Thanks to the original poster who suggested this fix.
