PCI card with two serial ports

I recently built a new desktop computer for my home office, using
a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L motherboard with an Intel Core 2
processor. This computer has two GB of memory, and a 500 GB hard
drive. I am running Windows XP Pro, SP 2 and for the most part
the computer works very well.

But, I need to connect two Avery/CoStar/Dymo label printers and
these each require a 9 pin serial port,. I bought a SYBA PCI
Multi I/O Controller Card from NewEgg and tried installing it.
but the installation process won't go to completion. I get an
error message that indicates an incompatibility or some such.

When I check in Device Manager I see a yellow question mark by
the Other devices - SM Buss Controller and I also see yellow !
marks by the Ports (COM & LPT) for three entries of Multifunction
Device. I don't know why there are three identical entries here,
but they each have the yellow ! by them.

Am I trying to install a PCI card/serial ports that isn't
compatible with Windows XP, or is there some other explanation?
What cold I try, next, before tossing this add-in card into the
trash basket? It's just a $10 item and isn't worth the return
cost and trouble, so if I can't get it to work I'll probably give
it to someone or trash it.

Thanks, Gordon

Hi Gordon, delete the offending items in Device Manager.
Re-start your machine.
XP should find new hardware.
Feed it the CD with the drivers on.

I did this, three times but never got beyond the initial hang-up.
There must be some incompatibility between the software on the CD
and Windows XP.

After each attempt to remove and re-install these devices, Device
Manager still shows the same errors.

Multifunction adapters
NetMos 9835 PCI Multi-I/O Controller
This device is working properly

Other devices
SM Small Bus Controller
The drivers for this device are not installed

Ports (COM & LPT)
Communication Port (Com!)
This device is working properly
Multifunction Device
The drivers for this device are not installed.

The Multifunction Device entry shows up three times, but all
three indicate the drivers are not installed.

I deleted them from Device manager and put the CD in the drive,
re-booted, then went through the re-install process three times
but got the same result each time.

Any suggestions as to what I might try next?

Thanks, Gordon

Sounds like it may be a chipset driver problem. Uninstall the card.
Uninstall the card drivers. Reboot. Reinstall, or better yet, get the
latest INF drivers from Intel for the P35 chipset:

http://downloadcenter.intel.com/fil...ome+Edition&lang=eng&strOSs=45&submit=Go!#DRV

http://tinyurl.com/259frc

Number 2 in the list is "INF Update Utility primarily for 3, 900 Series
version 8.3.1.1009". Click on Download. This takes you to another
page, where you will click on Download "INF Update Utility,etc..."

If you're using IE, go to the top where you see the image of a disk
drive at the far left of the thin, long "window"and to the right "To
help you protect,etc...", Click on it, select download file, download
it.

Make sure no programs are running and install the package. Reboot,
install the card drivers first, then power down and install the card.
Power back up, the system should see the new hardware and install the
drivers. If it can't find them, point update driver to the CD with the
software for the card on it.
