PC WON'T SHUT DOWN

When shutting down Windows XP, my PC will not close & the following message
appears:

UPDATES ARE BEING INSTALLED (1 OF 3).

DO NOT TURN OFF OR UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER; IT WILL TURN OFF AUTOMATICALLY"

However, nothing else happens!
Has anyone else encountered this problem?

one of my users received exactly the same message when he tried to shut down
his computer yesterday. It was left on all night, but has not progressed any
further. Anybody know what's happening? Can I pull the plug without damaging
Windows XP Pro, as I can see no other option?

I have a client who has also experienced this problem (with XP Home) - I am
also sunning XP SP" (Professional) and experienced the "Updates are being
installed" meesage but only 1 of 1 and it completed shut down in about 3
minutes.

My client did power off manually before the shutdown was complete and has
restarted with no visible effects so far!

I know that SP2 does not recognise some older versions of Norton AV software
(2003 for example) - could this be the problem? Maybe it wont happen if
Norton AV or Internet Security is disabled.

If Micosoft are monitoring this, it would be museful if the user was advised
that this procedure would happen before they select shut down (as used to
happen - i.e. Windows needs to restart your computer... OK/Cancel)

Same problem this morning! I shut down at 1am, and the PC still said it
was installing "1 of 2 updates" 7 hours later. My wife pulled the plug
without asking...and I was able to boot up and get online. I went to Windows
Update to view my update history. There is no record that anything happened
last night. The last record of an auto-update was the SP2 install about 2
weeks ago.
Are we missing a critical update now?
Why didn't Windows warn me that it wanted to run an update when I shut
down at 1am?
Microsoft, help!

I had this same problem today, only during boot up. I had to uninstall then
reinstall Norton Anti-virus 2005.

I have the same problem and see about 20 others over the course of the past
three days who also have the same problem. Hope Microsoft takes note and
suggests a solution.

Ditto, ditto. I've been unplugging for three days and keep looking for help
from Microsoft.

After 3 days of acting strange with the same repetitive set of mesages and
apparent attemps to install this update, by laptop finally automatically
installed it and cleared the problem (I think). Mind you, it took thre days
of waiting and turning it on and off and re-booting maybe 10 times.

Thanks you Microsoft for coming to our aid for this problem.
