pc wont restart or shut down

Hi.
Every thing was ok but now when i click start shut down or
restart nothing happens...but if i click stand by or
hibernate they work.
Any ideas what has caused this or better still how to fix
it. Many thanks

Hi Phil,

You've probaly got a task that just won't close when requested by the OS -
these can be very tricky to track!

I would suggest minimising (as far as you can) the number of processes that
are running then useing something like Sysinternal Process Explorer to see
what is really still running
(http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml) this is a great
and v. powerful tool to see whats going on 'under the hood'.

You can always hit & hold the power button for a few seconds to kill the OS,
but do be aware that this can cause problems from time to time, but not
usually if you hae killed all the processes you can first.
