I am thinking my hard drive crashed. My computer won't
boot up, instead it just gives me a manufacturer splash
screen and thats it. I can hear it start spinning, but
then it stops. Anyone with tips on recovering files is
much appreciated.

Also, prior to this happening, I was receiving a HD Smart
Error. Emailed Maxtor for details and used an HD Utility,
but the information of course, is lost on the hard drive
as well. Please advise on any possible way to recover
data from the HD.

If your data is precious, contact data recovery services. Their ads can be found in various
computer zines or via intenet. They are expensive.
Otherwise, remove the drive and visit nearest computer store.
They can help you for less price and time - but result not guaranteed.

The SMART errors were a sign of impending failure. Take the drive out and
put it in the freezer in a plastic bag for a few hours. This often will let
it work for a short time. Have another drive installed as slave to copy
data to if this works.
