PC to PC network problem (win xp)

i have my two computers linked by crossovercables, in network conections it says that they r conected, i go to my workgroup folder and i just find the pc that im in that moment, somethimes it appears the other one, but when i oppen it: "network path not found", i gave ip addreses to me ethernet cards, and i ping them in both computers but it dosnt work, i´ve tried everything, but i can´t fix it
i would really appreciate if you help m

1. Check that ICF is permanently disabled on both PCs, assuming they
run XP. Temporarily uninstall all other firewall and antivirus apps
on both PCs.
2. Check that the IPAs you assigned are in the same subnet. That means,
for IPA=a.b.c.d, a.b.c is the same and the d's differ.
3. Check the protocols: enable TCP/IP and NetBIOS over TCP/IP, disable
NetBEUI and IPX/SPX. Enable F&P sharing and Client for M$ Nets.
4. Check node visibility with PING. First, make sure each PC can PING
itself, using ping-by-number and ping-by-name; then see if each PC
can PING the other, both by-number and by-name.
