Shut down the pc through the normal procedure, start>shut down etc and the pc
will shut down. However it seems after a few seconds, it reboot by itself. Is
there any setting that I can change in win xp/bios. ...thanks

Double-check your "logout" box and make sure you do not have "restart"
selected. Good luck! :)

Right click My Computer | Properties | Advanced tab | Startup and
Recovery - Settings. Under System failure untic Automatically restart. Ok
out. Now try a shutdown. If it's an error causing this it should go to a
blue screen with text of the error message. Record it verbatim, then start
some research here:

What logout box? Do you mean the dialog box that appears when you click on
shutdown when the Welcome Screen is disabled? This doesn't appear if the
Welcome Screen is enabled. Are you on a domain?

At last back on this subject, uncheck the automatic restart, it does not
help. It will continue to restart and as if there is a preset time ( say
after 6 sec of shutting down), it will auto restart. Guess if I dont solve
this problem asap, more problems will crop up .
