PC reboots/shuts down

I have read about this all over the Internet and was wondering what is the
most likely cause. My PC will turn itself off occasionally (not every day
but sometimes 4 or 5 times in a day). This can happen when I am playing a
game or when I am not even at the computer. It also will turn itself on
sometimes as well (sometimes it turns off and then back on right away). If I
turn it off before I go to bed, it will come back on sometime that night
(usually happens about once a week).

I have checked my heatsink/processor, have cleaned everything out, checked
all of my BIOS settings, kept watch on my temps (the CPU maxes out at about
48 Celsius, the board at 40 Celsius), have updated all drivers and bios, ran
a RAM check...

The only other thing that was strange is that when it shut down the other
day, I could not turn it back on for about 5 minutes (the power button did
nothing).

I am under the impression that this is most likely power related but am not
sure (my power supply is 650W).

Since you've hit all of the major ones, I must conclude that either,
you're correct and you have a power supply issue, or you have a
progressively failing motherboard.

Also: it is possible that your issues are sepeately caused.

For mysterious wakeup: check that all "wake on" settings are disabled,
keyboard, mouse, LAN, usb, modem, ar time. Also check that A/C power
recovery is off.

For resets: your temps are fine, for an Athlon. But I'm not sure what
you have.
Just pecause the memtest passed doesn't mean you don't have a sublter
problem with the RAM: compatibility. For this we need much more
detailed information on your hardware. Get a system identification
tool such as everest or aida32 to give you a system inventory.

And check that none of your capicitors (little soda cans) are bulged or
leaking. This could be your headache.

First off, thank you very much for your reply.

I have ensured that all of those settings were turned off in the bios.

I guess I would be surprised if it was a memory compatibility issue since I
have had the memory for about 1.5 years. I did replace the board a few
months ago but only recently did this all start happening (so it is possible
that the board is slowly dying I guess).

I also replaced the power source somewhat recently but similarly, it worked
okay for a while.

FYI, I do have an Athlon (FX-55) processor.

The thing that makes this so difficult is that it is hard to test certain
theories since it does not always seem to happen.

Maybe I will try one of the tools you have suggested to get my system info.

Thanks again.

What happened to the last ones? Both the old MB and the Powersupply.
Also what brands are the new ones? They are not all created equal.

You have my sincere sympathy. I've been there.

I came across something today that may interest you. One of the
computers i was working on was always waking up ofter I'd shut it down.
Once the modem was replaced, it worked again.
