You don't specify what the malicious items are , but regardless, the free
version of AdAware from www.lavasoftusa.com would be a good place to start. I
hope you also have a good anti-virus program and a firewall installed.

What problems have you got with which search engines? If you mean the Windows Search function and it isn't working, try here:

If you are worried about your system being infected in any way, may I suggest that you use your AV program with the latest definitions and also check for any spyware that may be on your system with either/both of the following programs:
