I'll assume because of your post, that you have performed a HD defrag, you
have tried to start your computer in diagnostic mode using msconfig from the
run command on the start menu, and you cleaned your disk of unwanted files
(emptied trash, delete temp internet files, removed unused icons off your
desktop, etc...). If you haven't, do them. They help.
Second, pull up task manager (ctrl+alt+del). Click on the Performance tab.
Look at Commit Charge (K) and CPU usage. Is your CPU usage near 100%? Is the
Total line (the number) under Commit Charge (K) near the Limit line (the
number)? If both are yes, you have too many utilities running at start up for
your system. The begs the question: "Are all those utilities worth starting
if you can't use your computer?" Close a few of them down.
You also said you have Zone alarm. Did you turn off XP's firewall? Running
two software firewalls can cause unusual problems and slow sluggish system
responses.
At sometime, did you run a registry cleaner? If you use a lot of programs
and have to install/uninstall applications a lot, there’s a good chance there
are old entries in your registry that no longer are needed. At worst, this
could slow your computer down or cause other problems.
Once you finished the above stuff, let me know how it goes. Or if you need
help doing any of the above, let me know.
Thanks,

and also try a web scan from Trend Micro's Housecall.

Not every possible sypware/hackware/malware is detected by every
anti-spyware utitily. It is a 'better" method of running mutliple different
utilitties in order to ensure a "clean" PC.
