Hi there.

Could anyone direct me to a (preferably standalone) Windows9x & NT util
(or utils if there isn't a cross-platform one) that can *reliably*
report the general heat level inside PCs as well as CPU heat and HDD(s)
heat specifically?

Thanks many, many times, and cheers!

Monitors/controls all the things you list and a lot more.

There are various software tools that report what the temperature
sensors on MBs and so forth tell them...

MotherBoard Monitor, Everest, et al...

But, what they don't tell you is that the sensors are generally
inaccurate, an error of +/- 5C is quite common, and worse, they _drift_.

The ones in Hard Disks are more accurate and stabler, but if you want to
know the temperature inside a CPU case, get a thermometer and stick it
in there!

Cheers.

Hi Sol, :-)

At my system (WinXP), I'm using the following utilities. They are said
that are working at 98 or NT. I can't check it, sorry. Please check
them yourself.

* HDD Thermometer (from: http://www.rsdsoft.com/ ). Requires FREE
registration. Shows HD Temp at tray.
-----------------------------------
* Sandra ( http://www.sisoftware.net/sandra/ ). Free (somewhat limited)
version for private or educational use. From my personal experience,
they have an excellent mail support service, even for the free version.

Look at: Control Panel->System Information->Mainboard
Information->Temperature Sensors.

For HD's ,the best I have found is HDD Health from www.panterasoft.com .
It accurately predicted my HD failure due to excessive heat and sector
reassignment issues. For temp, the only way to get a very accurate temp
is with an external thermometer and probe. Motherboard Monitor is
pretty good, but you may want to check your mobo's website for a tool
they recommend. Abit has a good one that I use *sometimes*.
