PC Hangs when updating XP

HELP!!!!!! Somehow, my computer wont let me
automatically update my windows. Even when I go to
Microsofts website, it will hang on the screen that
says "searching for updates". Ive tried going into the
control panel to set the auto update option but the
computer will hang as soon as I click advanced options. I
dont know how to fix this and Microsoft wont help! Can
anyone help me?
