PC 'delayed' boot problem - PSU?

M

martin

Hey. This weekend I had completely unplugged my PC, and when I plugged it back
in, it wouldn't do a thing. No reaction at all when I press the power button.
The little green light on the mainboard is on. Now, when I leave it plugged
in for a while, and then press the power button, the thing turns on. Fans
start spinning, but it does not actually boot. No beeping, no signal to the
monitor, the only reaction is that things start spinning.
If I unplug it, and plug it back in, it's completely dead again. Until a few
minutes later, same thing happens.
I've removed every device that could be removed, but I can get no reaction
at all anymore.

Sound like a dead PSU?

Can be due to a number of things, but certainly
the PSU is the most likely and easiest to swap.

Clearly something is taking some time to charge up, but unless
you can try measuring the PS_ON and POWER GOOD lines
on the ATX connector with a multimeter, it isnt possible to say
for sure whether its the power supply or the motherboard.

There is a small possibility that its the cmos battery and
thats very cheap to try, but not very likely to be that.
