Pasting HTML code in the HTML pane

A

Arlene

In FP2002, how do you paste HTML code in a page? If I go to the HTML pane
and paste in code (perhaps code that I might see in a post to this
newsgroup), some of the characters change after they are pasted. I know in
earlier versions of FP, there was a special menu choice to do this. I read
up on inserting HTML in the Normal pane (see below), but that's not what I
want to do. I want to go to a specific place in the HTML and add additional
code at that point.

When you edit a page in the Normal pane, you can insert HTML by using an
HTML Markup component. On the Insert menu, click Web Component.
1.. In the left pane, click Advanced Controls.
2.. In the right pane, double-click HTML.
3.. Type the plain text or HTML you want to insert.
Thanks in advance.

Paste into Notepad first, then into FP in HTML View of the page.

Why haven't they released a patch or something that would allow people to do this in some other easy
way? That is so annoying.

Someone needs to make a patch that adds a Right-Click option for Paste HTML Code or something. THat
would be such a Huge improvement.

heh heh.

Personally, pasting into notepad is extremely easy, plus I can correct line
ending prior to pasting, etc.

How many proprietary binary formats would you like FrontPage to be able to
translate into HTML automatically? The FrontPage developers work hard at
doing so, but it is not an easy trick. Every program that it supports has a
proprietary binary format, which FrontPage must be able to decipher and
translate into HTML. And every program that FrontPage supports changes its
binary format every couple of years.

All it needs is a Paste Special option off the Right click so then I can choose "Plain Text". Lots of other programs have the Paste Speicl option off a right click....

you do get Paste Special from the toolbar Edit but not right click...someone could probably adjust that with a registry edit.

So are you saying the Edit, Paste Special, will work as well as Notepad?

Yeah but.
I always paste to notepad and then to hmtl view for two reasons.
1. It *always* clears any extraneous formatting.
2. I know instantly if there's a problem because if there is, all of the
script changes to the wrong colors. ;-)

Chalk it up to the "old dog / new tricks" syndrome, but I very seldom have
to go back and troubleshoot why a page won't render or function properly in
a browser.

If you do a Paste Special / Plain Text that should make the standard colors appear as well

I use the notepad method as well but only because there's no easier way at the moment

Correct.
Call me old fashioned. I like to see exactly what I'm actually pasting
before I paste it. Notepad lets me do it. I almost always have a notepad
page open and minimized when I'm working.

I also use a test web ( actually named test ) or what I call a "throw away"
web to work in when I'm trying something different. Then if I like what I'm
doing I'll copy and paste ( or import ) the file to a working web.
I also use test to answer questions in the news group. It's full of various
forms, scripts, etc in no particular order. So if a question about forms
comes up, open the page, right click the form... oh yeah form Properties >
Options > and so on.......

Good point, I hadn't thought of the viewablility issue.
But then again,,,,all my pages are TESTs!! Hehehee.
I have a zillion test webs (locally) well, maybe not a zillion...but at least 10 :)

A tangental question; have you ever had your clipboard sometimes display an option for more than one paste at a time? I get this every now and then...it displays a small menu with 3 little pages and asks which one to Paste Here...also Copy here...this confuses me no end because it only comes up sometimes. What the heck is that??

Actually it's done by calling a function from a dll.
Just to make sure though, when I get home I'll fire up Registry Monitor and
invoke the function and see if I can snag a registry trace. Problem is
though, from the time I launch the RegMon, maximize the FrontPage window and
select Paste special, there will have been about 2000 registry reads /
writes logged. Takes a bit of reading :-(

Not in html view in FP 2002 ... paste special is dimmed out on the edit
menu. Works in design view.
