When I paste an excel chart into a powerpoint slide
(pasting as links), the powerpoint pasted chart has
changed totally. Line breaks on the Y axis's have
changed. Any ideas on this!

When you select the chart in Excel, hold the shift key while going to
the Edit Menu and selecting copy. You then have a choice of how you
want the pasted chart to look like.

If you don't want to maintain links, follow Richard's advice. It's what
I would have suggested.

If you need the links so the embedded chart updates itself, format it in
Excel so it is exactly the way you want PowerPoint to render it,
including its size. Also, manually set the axis scale parameters in
Excel, even if all you do is uncheck the Auto boxes on the Scale tab. If
PowerPoint has to stretch or shrink it, you may see a completely
different appearance.
