Paste Special Transpose error

Hope someone has an idea to help me here - I have used the Copy then Paste
Special-Transpose sequence for years in Excel to transpose a table for
analyses.

All of a sudden today it fails - consistently gives a message: copy & paste
area are not the same -

I copy the table, go to a blank [new] worksheet, put the cursor in A1, and
do Paste Special-Transpose - then I get the message. I even selected a table
space exactly equal to the RxC transposed and tried it - nothing works.

I "repaired" my Office XP apps using the CD - still does the same thing.

There are no grouped cells in the original table.

Any thoughts?

In the source file Select All using Ctrl+A. From menu Clear|Formats...and
then copy and paste to a new workbook
