Paste link into list, can it be done?

I posted this under the links discussion group, but thought I might
try a bigger audience as I've yet to get a response

I have an .xls (2003) file that has a list defined in it. I want to
paste a link from another .xls file (also 2003) into a cell within
that list, but
the "Paste Link" option under edit->paste special is greyed out and
not available. If I move outside of the list, it is available. Is
there a way to paste a link into a list? If not, can anyone explain
the rationale for the restriction?

Thanks in advance.

(just guessing)...

- the new "lists" characteristic (available from xl-2003) has the (main ?) option to manage/share your lists (i.e. in SharePoint)
- for external links you would have to make sure external data is also available -?-

- one (possible) way to bypass this "restriction" could it be not through (edit) paste special -> paste links
but enter linked formule directly in the cell/s (i.e.) =[other workbook]sheet1!a1
toggle as needed your references in (semi)absolute/relative notation (a1, $a$1, $a1, a$1)
(and keep in mind the availability of external data -just in case-)

hth,
hector.
