How can I eliminate the start up box that tells me this
computer has been locked and then I have to enter a
password to get started? I don't recall this being there
when I first got Windows XP last spring.

Go into control panal and then into users accounts and
disable the password, but I suggest you don't do that.
It's a good idea to leave that on for security.

Sounds like the checkbox requiring a password when you resume has been
enabled. Goto the screensaver tab on desktop properties and uncheck
it.

This can also pop up if somebody using the computer hits ctl-alt-del
and clicks "lock computer." The only way to stop that is to tell them
to stop that.
