Password protection - RTF files

Is there a way to password protect rtfs (for editing only) in Word? I know
this can be done to docs, but I have a series of files that have to be saved
as rtfs to correctly merge from an external database application. Sadly,
"elves" have been known to modify them without asking. I'm trying to avoid
saving them read-only, and other suggestions I've received don't work because
of the merge process.

Thanks-
Karen

Hi Karen -

Take a look at the Tools>Protect Document features which can be applied to
RTFs as well as DOCs - assuming you're using Word 2002/03.

Thanks, Bob.

Here's a little more detail. I'm using Word 2003 SP2. I tried
Tools>Protect Document, then selecting Editing Restrictions>No Changes (Read
only) and setting a password to start enforcement. This does a great job of
not allowing any edits to the document (you can try, but nothing happens).
Problem is, the "Protect Document" task panel appears automatically on any
keystroke, and it appears that all anyone has to do is click "Stop
Protection" at the bottom of the task panel, and the protection is lifted
without asking for a password.

Am I missing something? I'm stumped.

Karen
