Password protected directory management

Bob Davis

My web host supports password protected directories, but they are pretty
vague about how to configure from front page. They are also very clear that
they charge to support users with explicit front page web authoring issues.
They run FP 2002 extensions on a linux based server. I do not know what
kind of web server software they are running.

Here is what's posted on their support website:

Attention FrontPage Users: If you are a FrontPage user you can password
protect directories from within the program. Please consult your user manual
or online user guides for more information. Please do not attempt to alter
your .htaccess file while FrontPage extensions are installed for your
server. This may cause your account to become inoperable.

Anyone have any hints at how to add password protection to directories using
Front Page 2002?

Thanks,
Bob

Does the account / server come with CPanel??

If so, go to Access Menu and click on Web Protect. Then
click the folder you want protected and assign a user name and password.

If you don't have CPanel or a web protect option.
You will need to create and place a file named .htaccess in the
folder you want protected, and another file named .htpasswd
in a folder above the root of the web. ( outside of the public_html folder )

Some info here. http://httpd.apache.org/docs/programs/htpasswd.html

and here: http://www.xs4all.nl/~remcovz/htpasswd.html
