password protect

I am operating windows xp, microsoft works word
processor, microsoft works 2000. I am trying to password
protect a word doc - unsuccessfully. Is this not
available on this version? How do I password protect a
document in this system?

Assuming this is the Microsoft Word wordprocessor and not the Works one (see
title bar) then
Tools > options > security.
