password protect windows xp folder

I have a back up pc running windows xp.

On it I have shared folders.

I need to password protect these folders, so many pc's can copy information
to their own folders, however they cannot view other peoples folders because
they do not know the correct password.

Can XP do this or does anybody know of some software I can install that will
allow me to password protect folders across a windows peer to peer network.

Many thanks for any help you can provide.

Neil.

You can't password protect folders. XP Home or Pro? You can use NTFS
security to control who has access to what - and it's a lot better than
password protection.

Like Win2K, WinXP's file security paradigm doesn't rely on, or
allow, the cumbersome method of password protection for individual
applications, files, or folders. Instead, it uses the superior method
of explicitly assigning file/folder permissions to individual users
and/or groups.

Of course, if you have WinXP Pro, you can encrypt the desired
files/folders.

As a crude work-around, if you actually prefer Win9x's way, you
can place the file in a compressed folder, and set a password to
uncompress the folder to view/access its contents.
