Password Protect Root Web

Is there a way to password protect a root web? www.bestdiamondbasics.com.
If not, how do I keep my domain, yet have people end up at the protected
subsite? An index page only with an "ENTER" linked to the subsite? Thank
you.

How to password protect part of a web:

It says FP 2000 but it applies to 2002 and 2003.
