Password protect page

So far I have come up empty on all of the try this and try thats in the
discussion group regarding password protecting pages....I have my sub-website
published on my server, but the "server" option under "tools" is grayed out
so I cant set a password. Verio, my service provider, says there is nothing
they can do at their end, they say it has to be done in FP 03.
I cant believe there is no "Simple" way to just password protect one page
with one password......very frustrating. Any help is much appreciated
(already tried all of the microsoft knowledge base stuff)

You are trying to set permissions from within the subweb/subsite in FP, not the root web, correct?

Your web host must configure the extensions for your account to allow you to set unique permissions
on a subweb/subsite. There is nothing that you can do or anyone other then your web host to give you
the ability to set permissions.

Yes, but I can't set permissions in either the root or the sub website, as
the"Tools" "Server" option is grayed out in both. My web host (Verio)
supports the FP extensions, but they don't know anything about setting
permissions at their end. Also tried the ASP files route, but all that
launches is the "code", not the login applet. Also tried CGI scripts without
success. Why is it such a cunundrum to have a single html web page pasword
protected, like an MS Word document, etc. The only other alternative I think
of is to create a PDF document of the protected information, password protect
it, and set a hyperlink to it.

The problem is not FP!

One of following is what you are running into:

1. Your web host does not having a clue on how to configure/manage the FP extensions
or
2. Your web host has made a decision to not allow customers access this feature of the FP
extensions.

Their is a program free to download at http://www.mtopsoft.com/ called HTML
password lock, but it has lots of advertising.

Problem solved, finally got a hold of one of Verio's guru techs whostepped
me through the process of opening my FP site manually, rather than just
connecting to the site normally, which then lit up my grayed out server and
allowed me me to set permissions. They should probably submit this solution
to MS knowledgebase. I knew it had to be something simple.

So how were you opening your site in FP?

I only know of two ways:

1. Browse to the site in IE, then File Menu | Edit with FP

2. Launch FP, then File Menu | Open Web / Site

I always use #2.

I had to use "Open Website" and then had to manually "type" in the full url,
pointing to the sub website, even though it was in the browser list, I can't
just "select" or "browse" to the website from the list to open like I do in
the parent website. It's a funky way of doing things but it worked so I am
happy. There was an other alternative, to use the host's Apache web controls
to individually password protect folders on my website, but they told me I
would be risking corrupting the FP extensions, as there some incompatibility
issues with Unix and FP.

Ok. When I need to work with subwebs, I always open the root web first, using #2 below, then I
double click the subweb to open.
