is there a way to password protect an entire cdrw which I use for backup?

You need to define 'backup' more specifically. For example, you can password
protect Norton Ghost image files and I would imagine there are many backup
apps that also allow you to password protect them. But it also depends who
you are trying to protect against, e.g. your 5-year old or the CIA?

If you mean using a back up utility, not just manually adding files to a
CD-RW, you could use Nero BackItUp, or another back up to CD utility that
offers that feature:

General Information

Nero BackItUp is an easy to operate, convenient and powerful program for
backing up and restoring data. It allows you to archive your back ups on CD
and DVD, which is an economical and secure method.
Nero BackItUp additionally includes the additional features:

Backup to disc, hard disk, image recorder or LAN
Split backup to several discs
Different backup varieties
Assistant-based backup
Filetype filter
Automatic backup due to definable jobs, even if the program is inactive
Complete or individual recovery of data files out of a backup
Search function for archived data files
Perpetuation of original file structure

Password protection and encryption for additional security

Complete disc and partition backup (on several discs if needed)
Only the used sectors are backed up
Complete system backup and recovery

another way is to use winzip on the files and password
protect the archive then burn them to cd.you can make the
zip files self-extracting if you want to be able to use
them on a comp without installing winzip first.

I just want to copy my files manually to a cdrw and password protect them.
Is there a way to do this, or must I use some software program. If so, is
there a free version that you can recommend. Thanks.
