Password protect an Excel Document from viewing

Hi,

Information collected via a web survey and transferred into an Excel
document was emailed to me by a colleague. I attempted to password secure
this document but for some reason the "Password to open" and "Password to
modify" options are viewable but apparently not available. I usually have no
problem securing a document by simply going to "Tools" then "Options" and
then choosing "Password to open". I'd like to know why these options aren't
available and possible ways to ensure that only someone with a password can
view this document. I'm using Windows XP professional and I'm not sure what
version of Excel but I assume the latest version.

Please an suggestions would be welcome. Thanks

There is no way to insure that someone can't open an Excel doc. Its password
protection is weak and is easily circumvented.

In short, it's not a secure program, even if you create (weak) passwords.

Thanks Dave. It's sad but not surprising to hear that password protection
doesn't do much. Simply something I'm required to do for certain documents at
work, which though minor, is an attempt at safety. So bottom line, I still
must password protect the document, it would help to know why, the "Password
to open" option is sometimes not available; more specifically in what
instances would an Excel document be restricted from being assigned a
password and how can that be overridden.
