I Have an HP 304W, with windows XP Home. I was wanting to erase the hard
drive. But when I get to Bios set up screen it asks for a password. I do
not have a password. How do I know if the recovery disks I made will work if
I cannot get onto that screen? How do I find or eliminate that password
request?

This isn't an XP OS issue. I suggest you contact HP tech support.

To do a clean install, boot the Windows XP install CD-Rom. Setup inspects
your computer's hardware configuration and then begins to install the setup
and driver files. When the Windows XP Professional screen appears, press
ENTER to set up Windows XP Professional.

(Note: If your drive controller is not natively supported then you'll want
to boot the Windows XP CD-Rom. Then *F6* very early and very important (at
setup is inspecting your system) in the setup to prevent drive controller
detection, and select S to specify additional drivers. Then later you'll be
prompted to insert the manufacturer supplied Windows XP driver for your
drive controller in drive "A")

Read the license agreement, and then press the F8 key to accept the terms of
the license agreement and continue the installation.

When the Windows XP Professional Setup screen appears, all the existing
partitions and the unpartitioned spaces are listed for each physical hard
disk. Use the ARROW keys to select the partitions Press D to delete an
existing partition, If you press D to delete an existing partition, you must
then press L (or press ENTER, and then press L if it is the System
partition) to confirm that you want to delete the partition. Repeat this
step for each of the existing partitions When all the partitions are deleted
press F3 to exit setup, (to avoid unexpected drive letter assignments with
your new install) then restart the pc then when you get to this point in
setup again select the unpartitioned space, and then press C to create a new
partition and specify the size (if required). Windows will by default use
all available space.

Be sure to apply SP2 or at least these two below to your new install before
connecting to any network. Internet included. (sasser, msblast)

It didn't come with an install cd-rom. when I first got the computer, it
told me to make the recovery cd's. I can't use them, because when I put the
cd in and start up and click f1, the biso screen wants a password.

You shouldn't need to access the system bios. Check the manufacturer's
documentation for the steps to complete the restore process.

There should be a jumper placement to reset the cmos to factory default or
possibly removing the mobo battery for a few minutes.

I do appreciate your patience with me. I bought a program to erase the hard
drive. It states to re-install any operating system and partitions when
done. I do not want to attempt this, until I know I can put all the orignial
stuff back on the hard drive. So, when trying to attempt system recovery (
to see if the recovery disks worked) the bios screen that came up when I
clicked f1, asked for a password before I could move down to "boot". I
don't have a password or if I do, I don't know it.

This hard drive must have a partition to mae C & D drives.

I purchased "Drive Erase Pro" (program). Once the drive is erased, I want to
make the drive like it was when I bought the computer. I am giving the
computer away and do not want any of my info on the comoputer.

What program? What steps are you going to perform once the drive is erased?

If you mean you can't get into the CMOS settings, go to the mfg site for
into on how to get past it. It's usually a jumper remove/replace or vice
versa.

If you mean the password to get into XP, you dn't need it. Just boot from
the XP CD.

You need to be clearer with your questions.
