password for Excel 2000 workbook

When I read help for excel 2000 on how to password
protect a workbook, it tells me to

----------
2. On the Tools menu, click General Options.

3. In the Password to open box, type a password, and then
click OK.
Passwords are case sensitive. Type the password exactly
as you want users to enter it, including uppercase and
lowercase letters.

4. In the Reenter password to proceed box, type the
password again, and then click OK.
-----------

First, I only have a "Tools | Options" menu choice with a
General tab.

But then, when I go to the "General" tab, there is
no "Password to Open" dialog box. And there is
no "Reenter password to proceed box" either.

Can anyone help me to password protect my workbook when I
don't have the appropriate dialog boxes showing?

Thanks.

Thanks for the quick reply...

Yes,

I have set a password through the Tools|Protection menu
choice. (I first set it to protect for Structure and
Windows. Later I tried just protecting for Windows.)

But even though I can set a password this way, when I
then Save the file and exit Excel, and then double-click
on the workbook's icon, it opens just like normal.

I can view and edit contents of all worksheets, etc.

This isn't any kind of password protection I want.

I want the workbook to ask for a password before it opens
if it is password protected. I don't want anyone without
the password to even be able to open this workbook.
this doesn't happen.

Do you know what could be going on with this?

Hi Joe!

Use:

File > Save As > Tools > General Options
Give and Confirm Passwords
OK
Give a File name or accept existing name
Save

Sorry but I had not completely understood what you were looking for in your
previous post.
What you want (as described in your reply) you will find I believe as
follows:
Open your workbook normally.
Then, go File|Save As...
Then on THAT dialog box go to Tools|General Options...
You should find a dialog box there with the password proctection you need.
