Pass Through?

In trying to turn old VHS tapes into DVD's I found that my biggest loss
in quality is right up front in the capture mode. I have seen on this NG
that the best way is to use a DV camera with the pass through feature
into a Firewire card. Since I already own a video camera(Hi-8) and do
not want to buy another just for this purpose, is there any devices out
there that don't cost what a camera does that will do this chore?

Cheap ones are the dazzle from pinnacle. Better ones from canopus or miglia.
You do pay for what you get, so expect less trouble with the better ones.
Canopus also do internal fitting pci cards.
