PartitionMagic8 & Vista?

W

webster72n

I managed to install PowerQuest Partition Magic8 on my machine (Vista SP1).
The following option is given to me:
Length of partition table incorrect.
CHS length: 20979295
LBA length: 20971520
FileSyst. length: 20971519
Partition Magic wants to change it to the correct value of 20979295.
My question: is it safe to answer 'Yes' and let PM do it?
Presumably this has to do with the different file formats (FAT32 and NTFS)?
Suspect the answer to be negative, but hope for the opposite.

Harry,

Partition Magic 8 is not compatible with Vista. Do yourself a favor and
uninstall the software. If you're not convinced, search this newsgroup
for issues reported related to using PM8 including rendering systems
unusable.

Consider Acronis Disk Director if you need a partition manager.

Partition Magic 8 is not compatible with Windows Vista. If you try and use it,
it will corrupt the operating system.

That was quick. Thank you Carey and your predecessors.
It doesn't come as a surprise to me and I definitely will not use the
program here in Vista.
It worked ok. in ME is the reason I installed it. Now I shall reverse the
situation.
Thanks again,

Harry.

Paragon Software offers a free version of its partition manager that may
also meet your needs.

You would be wise to forget Partition Magic as it is not compatible with
Windows Vista. Allowing the software to make changes could possibly damage
your system. I certainly wouldn't allow PM to change anything.

DO NOT - I repeat - DO NOT use any Partition Magic program that is not a
current version. The older versions do NOT understand the partition
structure as laid down by Vista. For example, PM 8 will trash your hard
drive and make you clear the hard drive of all resident partitions. You will
have to start over as if it were a new drive just out of the box.

Many people here use Acronis Disk Director Suite (Version 10.0.2160) for
their partition work. Apparently the latest version of Partition Magic is
also no problem.

Harry, have you tried Vista's own partitioning application, Disk Management?
If that will not do what you want it to do then Acronis Disk Director should
do the trick. Obviously Acronis Disk Director isn't free but I do use it if
Vista's Disk management application won't do what I need it to do. An
alternative, again not free, is Paragon Hard Disk Manager Suite 2008.

The spec sheet/system requirements for Disk Director doesn't say anything
about Vista. Only "Microsoft Windows Professional x64
Edition/XP/2000/NT/Me/98."

Regardless of what it says - Disk Director works fine. They will not likely
change their verbiage until Windows 7 has been released to the public as a
RTM build.

Then they will come out with a newer version with a couple of more bells and
whistles and call it designed for Windows 7 . Meanwhile their old version
works without error.

I certainly am grateful for all the contributions here and would like to
thank everyone involved.
Recall seeing disk management, but didn't realize its full potential. Thanks
for the tip and certainly will make good use of it.
Enjoy being here,

Harry.

Regardless of what the spec sheets says I've been using Acronis Disk
Director on Windows Vista Ultimate for absolutely ages. It certainly works
fine for me.
