Partitioning so I can dual boot - Says "Access Denied"

I am partitioning my C drive so I can install Windows Pro as a duel boot to
the pre-installed Windows Vista Home Premium 6.0 )build 6001: Service Pack
1) My instructions says that I am to select "Shrink Volume" in Disk
Management. It starts to do that then I get a box that drops down that says,
"Local Disk Manager" at the top, and below it says "Access is Denied". How
do I get past this to shrink the volume?

Is this your personal machine? Did you buy it new or take it home from your
company?

It sounds as if IT has locked you out of this function. Talk to them and get
their permission to do what you wish to do.

You are aware that the recommended procedure for dual booting is to
install the "older" OS (XP) followed by installing the "newer" OS (Vista)
in a separate partition/drive? If not, it will be necessary to use credit
or a third party boot manager utility such as VistbBootPro to modify the
Vista boot manager- otherwise no dual boot.

One solution would be to use the Gparted Live Linux CD to do your
partitioning - that's what it's made for. BTW - I hope that what you want
really is a 'dual boot' as opposed to a 'duel boot'.

isn't my computer. Why is that Richard?

AJR, read the question please. I only want to know how to get past the
"Access Denied" when I use "Shrink Volume. As far ad the setup for dual
booting, there IS more than one way to do it.

Ray, I'm NOT using Linux, therefore, I don't have a Gparted Live Linux CD.

If anyone can address the question, I would appreciate it. Otherwise, thanks
to the three who tried.

Have you tried using a third-party partition manager??

Many people buy cast off computers when their company upgrades. But if you
did, it sure helps to let one know that fact.

You don't need to use Linux. All you do is download the ISO file, burn it
to CD, stick it in the drive and reboot.
