Partitioning drives in Vista

S

Sin4sure

I have a new toshiba Laptop that I partitioned into a dual boot C: Vista( 112 GB Primary partition, System, Boot, Page file, active, crash dump) and D: WinXP (36.5 GB , Primary partition) using
VistaBootPro 3.2
Now I would like to take some space from the C:Vista drive and create another partition strickly for storage use of pics, mp3's and docs. Items that can be used by both Os's. No programs.
How do you go about creating a third partition as I already have two primary partitions?

Thanks

Cindy

In order to take space from drive/partition C: and use it to create
partition E: you will have to use a 3rd party partitioning tool.

The steps would be to shrink partition C:

Move partition D: to take up the unallocated space freed up from C: This
will move the unallocated space to the end of partition D:

Create a new logical partition E: in the unallocated space that is now to
the "right" side (end) of partition D:

Acronis Disk Director Suite version 10.0 build 2160 from www.acronis.com is
a useful tool to do this. After the program has been installed on your
computer you create a boot CD that will run Disk Director. When booted up in
this fashion you can work with the primary partitions without worrying about
locked system files causing any issues

BootIt NG from Terabyte Unlimited will also do non destructive partitioning.

Many times, the built in disk management utility can not shrink C: (system
partition) as much as necessary due to locked system files. Then you are
stuck with half of what you need and have to get the 3rd party program
anyway. I believe it is just more efficient to begin with a tool that is
known that will work.

You can certainly try it, but it has restrictions on how much it can shrink,
so quite often you can't get what you want. I use Acronis Disk Director
Suite 10, and it does work well in Vista.

Download Mandrake Linux or almost any other Linux. You can use their
partition manager to format, resize, etc. It's free.

if you have enough memory (1gb or more) why not use VPC2007 and run the xp in a virtual environment.
easier to switch back and forth instead of dual booting.
