partitioning a hard drive for xp

I built my first computer with
Biostar NForce 400 MBD mainboard M7NCD
AMD Athlon XP 3200
Seagate 7200 80 Gbytes hard drive
Geforce fx5200 VGA Card

Question
Do I have to partition the hard drive for XP?
Reasion why I get an error message when it crashes.
It reads
Driver_IRQL_NoT_Less_or_Equal
I am useing the Seagate Diskwizard starter

The error message may not be related to your partitioning, but it is ALWAYS
a good idea to partition a HD.

You should reserve the C: drive for the OS only, and put all your apps and
data on separate partition. The ultimate arrangement is up to you. The
reason is that should you ever have to reformat the HD to re-install the OS,
you only need to reformat C:, and don't lose your data. You will still have
to re-install your apps to restore the Registry, though...

I would recommend 10 GB or so for the OS, and maybe split the remainder into
2 equal sections.
