Partition size change

Brad

I've been backing up WinXP Home (FAT32), partitions C: & D:, to a secondary
(NTFS) drive using Norton Ghost now for years. On completion I keep a
record of the image split sizes and partition sizes, a portion of this file
is shown below:

-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
C_nov28h.gho (2,097,145 KB) ghost commands were: ghostall.bat and skip_c.txt
C_nov28h.001 (2,097,140 KB)
C_nov28h.002 (1,419,721 KB)
D_nov28h.gho (2,097,139 KB) ghost commands were: ghostall.bat and skip_d.txt
D_nov28h.001 (2,097,143 KB)
D_nov28h.002 (2,097,122 KB)
D_nov28h.003 (2,097,147 KB)
D_nov28h.004 (2,097,151 KB)
D_nov28h.005 (1,385,768 KB)
28 Nov 2008 C: partition size = 12.30 GB (13,299,220,480 bytes) 12683 mb
28 Nov 2008 D: partition size = 12.40 GB (13,366,214,656 bytes) 12747 mb
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
C_dec15h.gho (2,097,145 KB) ghost commands were: ghostall.bat and skip_c.txt
C_dec15h.001 (2,097,127 KB)
C_dec15h.002 (1,479,316 KB)
D_dec15h.gho (2,097,123 KB) ghost commands were: ghostall.bat and skip_d.txt
D_dec15h.001 (2,097,143 KB)
D_dec15h.002 (2,097,122 KB)
D_dec15h.003 (2,097,147 KB)
D_dec15h.004 (2,097,134 KB)
D_dec15h.005 (1,385,817 KB)
15 Dec 2008 C: partition size = 12.50 GB (13,435,273,216 bytes) 12813 mb
15 Dec 2008 D: partition size = 12.40 GB (13,366,263,808 bytes) 12747 mb
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------
C_jan09h.gho (2,097,135 KB) ghost commands were: ghostall.bat and skip_c.txt
C_jan09h.001 (2,097,149 KB)
C_jan09h.002 (1,346,008 KB)
D_jan09h.gho (2,097,123 KB) ghost commands were: ghostall.bat and skip_d.txt
D_jan09h.001 (2,097,124 KB)
D_jan09h.002 (2,097,130 KB)
D_jan09h.003 (2,097,128 KB)
D_jan09h.004 (2,097,142 KB)
D_jan09h.005 (1,456,690 KB)
09 Jan 2008 C: partition size = 13.20 GB (14,224,424,960 bytes) 13565 mb
09 Jan 2008 D: partition size = 12.50 GB (13,449,871,360 bytes) 12827 mb
-------------------------------------------
-------------------------------------------

I recently found that C: partition was reporting a size of 13.20 GB even
though I had not installed nor updated anything. I ran a virus scan, chkdsk
etc. nothing. I decided to restored C_dec15h.gho which should have taken it
back to 12.50 GB however C: partition now reports 13.70 GB. I restored
C_nov28h.gho and it now reports 13.50 GB when it should read 12.30 GB.

I thought that it was possibly an issue with Windows Explorer reporting
incorrectly however D: partition is reporting correctly.

The other strange thing is if you compare C: image split sizes from the
previous you'll see that they are relatively close not out by 1.20 GB

Any Ideas ?????

The only thing I can think of that would be that sort of size would be
the page file. I wonder if for some reason this is now being counted
in the totals you report whereas before it wasn't?

No idea why though...

Thanks for the thought Alister, I'll check into the pagefile.

You have reported that you chkdsk already.

Did you chkdsk /f or /r or both?

Start -> Run -> cmd -> chkdk c: /f /r
