I am running XP Home, and one of my data partitions - which
uses NTFS - suddenly reported itself to be RAW (unformatted)
instead.
Computer Management/Disk management reports the disk is
Healthy, and a piece of demoware (Restorer 2000) I tried was
able to to rescue files.
But what I really want, of course, is some freeware that can
recover the whole disk, or failing that, at least recover the
data to another disk.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like your Master Boot Record is corrupted. There was just
an article on 24hours.support.helpdesk that dealt with this for
Win98. You might search for it. Or something like Ranish
Partition Manager might do this for you.

To be really safe , before you try anything , I would >

Slave it to another hard drive / comp ( no need to bolt it in , just
cable it & leave it outside the case ) & copy your stuff
onto the other HD .
You may have a choice of jumper settings on the master HD , such as
master with slave or MS .

Here are some other programs .

File Recovery 3 (freeware)

Windows 95/98/Me/NT/2000/XP

Drive Rescue

Drive Rescue (freeware) OS: Win9x/NT/ME/2000/XP

DFSEE (www.dfsee.com) is shareware, but gives a month to evaluate it. It
may be what you need (after which you can delete it, or keep it and pay
for it if you choose.) It is fully functional at download.
