I'm running win2k with all the updates and patches. Its located on the c
drive, and we had a seperate 40 gig drive that was formatted as the d drive
(for data backups).

A few days ago we stopped being able to access the d drive and it showed
that the drive was not formatted. Then we noticed that even if we blitz the
drive and reformat it, we're only allowed to format 8GB, which was the
amount of free space on the drive before it crashed.

We tried partition magic, and it showed the missing space the first time we
ran it, but now even that isn't showing the full space of the drive.

Any suggestions???

Download and run the diagnostic program that your
hard disk manufacturer makes available on his home
site.

Have you tried clearing the CMOS table copy of the BIOS (by a jumpering
a 'CMOS Clear' 2-pin header or removing the wafer battery for minute)?
Also tried replacing the battery?

I'm assuming that when using PartitionMagic that you are using a DOS
bootable floppy with PM on it (so you are NOT under Windows when running
it).
